Chapter 22
Back to Grinding
It was the light through the blinds that woke me up. It was 7:30 in the morning and Ced wasn’t in the bed with me. My head was bouncing and my body definitely felt the workout from last night. Damn, I’m sore. I found his shirt, pulled it over my head, and ran to the bathroom to release the pressure from my bladder. As I washed and dried my hands, I heard Ced’s voice.
‘‘Bout time you wake up, Sleeping Beauty.”
“Why?”
“I made you breakfast. I can’t cook like you, but I tried my best.”
I had to smile.
“You are an amazing man.”
“Naw, you are amazingly better.”
“You and your words. Let me guess, that’s in your dictionary, too?”
“You know it,” he laughed.
Breakfast was pretty good. He made some pancakes with scrambled eggs and grits. I asked myself for the millionth time, why is this man single?
It didn’t matter that he was single, or why, because he was not going to be for long. I could handle that.
“Look, Ced, on Saturday I gotta go see this nigga, ‘cause I gotta set things straight. I am gonna tell him that I’m seein’ someone else.”
Ced nodded his head, but he didn’t say anything.
“I’m not gonna say who you are, ‘cause that’s none of his business, and I don’t want no drama comin’ to you.”
“I respect your gangsta all the way, but I don’t give a fuck if you tell him who I am ‘cause at the end of the day, no nigga puts fear in my heart. I only fear God.”
“I understand, and I hear you loud and clear. I also told Dimples that I’d help her pack, ‘cause she’s goin’ out of town with her parents. I’m drivin’ her to the airport on Friday.”
That was a straight up lie, but what I was I supposed to do? Tell him I had to go hit a lick? It wasn’t time for all that. I continued what I was saying. “So, I got Dimples Friday, that nigga on Saturday, so I won’t be back until that evenin’.”
“That’s cool. I’ll grab my kids and take them out somewhere. What time I gotta take you back home?”
“Later. Are you mad?”
“Naw, never. When you give me a reason to be mad at you, then I will be, but for now, I’m good.”
“Will you always agree to everythin’ I say?”
“Only if it helps the both of us, then it’s whatever you want and like, baby.”
Our day was beautiful. I re-twisted his dreads and braided them back. We played a few games, cleaned the house, talked, and just enjoyed each other’s company in general. Leaving him for two days was gonna be hard, super hard.
When we pulled up in front of his apartment to get my car, we kissed like the end of the world was on its way. When I finally pulled away from him, he looked into my eyes and said, “I’m gonna check up on you, but if you ever need me for anythin’, I’m just a button away.
